Yesterday Priti typed an essay of 5000 words at the speed of 60 words per minute. Today she typed the same essay faster and her speed was 15% more than yesterday. What is the approximate difference in the time she took to type yesterday and the time she took to type today?

Answer: (c)

Time taken yesterday = No. of words typed Typing speed

= $5000/60$ = 83.33 mins.

Speed today = 60 × 115% = 69

Time taken = $5000/69$ = 72.46 mins

Diff. = 83.33 – 72.46

= 10.87 or approx 10 minutes.

Question :12

A student scores 64% marks in 6 papers of 150 marks each. He scores 25% of his total obtained marks in Hindi and English together. How much is his total score for both these papers?

Answer: (d)

Total marks obtained by the student

= 6 × $64/100$ × 150 = 576

Marks obtained in Hindi and English

= 25% of 576 = $576 × 25/100$ = 144

Question :13

If the numerator of a fraction is increased by 250% and the denominator is increased by 300%, the resultant fraction is $7/9$. What is the original fraction ?

Answer: (c)

Let the original fraction be = $x/y$

According to the question,

${x × 350/100}/{y × 400/100} = 7/9$

${7x}/{8y} = 7/9$

$x/y = 7/9 × 8/7 = 8/9$

Question :14

In a factory, producing parts of an automobile, the parts manufactured on the shop floor are required to go through quality checks, each conducted after a specific part of the processing on the raw material is completed. Only parts that are not rejected at one stage are put through subsequent stages of production and testing. If average rejection rates at these three testing stages during a month are 10%, 5% and 2% respectively, then what is the effective rejection rate for the whole plant ?

Answer: (a)

Let the total no. of parts produced at initial stage be 100.

Then after three successive percentage rejections of 10%, 5% and 2%, we have

100 × 0.9 × 0.95 × 0.98 = 83.79

Therefore, a single effective rejection rate.

= 100 – 83.79 = 16.21

Question :15

15% of 6500 = ? % of 12500

Answer: (d)

$15/100 × 6500 = ?/100 × 12500$

? = ${15 × 6500}/122500$ = 7.8
